The following is a honest review of The Murder Rule by Dervla McTiernan and my suggested age rating. I was gifted an ARC of this book from NetGalley and William Morrow & Co. in exchange for a review.
Synopsis of The Murder Rule
Hannah is a law student determined to right the wrongs done to her mother Laura. She discovers the perfect opportunity through The Innocence Project. The Innocence Project is currently working on freeing a man convicted of murder and rape named Michael. Michael is the man Hannah’s mom has been running from since she was a teenager. Although Hannah’s motives seem to align with The Innocence Project’s, they couldn’t be more opposite. While Hannah must pretend to be a team player in proving Michael’s innocence, what she hopes is to find evidence that will keep him locked away for life.
Review of The Murder Rule
What I Liked:
I really like the concept of this book and how it centers on The Innocence Project. Being a true crime podcast junkie The Innocence Project was already something I was familiar with and what made this book intriguing to me. I enjoyed the dual timelines present in the story bouncing from the present to Hannah’s mother’s diaries in the 90’s. Hannah is without a doubt a devoted daughter set to provide justice to the wrongs she believes her mother suffered. I admire her dedication to her mother and the cause she strongly believes in.The plot twist was also one I did not see coming and gave the story a psychological twist.
What I Didn’t Like:
Although I enjoyed the spotlight on The Innocence Project, I have a hard time believing a student and stranger from nowhere would be able to “infiltrate” a non-profit unnoticed. At times the plot seemed a little far fetched and unbelievable which is fine but hard to swallow when it is centered on real-life scenarios. The dialogue was also a little bland at times and the descriptions less than creative.
Overall I enjoyed this story and gave it a 3.5/5 stars.
I also discovered that the author has a detective series called the Cormac Reilly series that I would love to check out eventually.
