The following is a honest review of XOXO by Axie Oh and my suggested age rating.
Synopsis of XOXO
XOXO follows our main character Jenny, a cello prodigy driven to get into an elite music school upon graduation. One night while working in her uncle’s karaoke bar, she meets a boy. After having a sing off they run into each other again on her bus ride home. They end up spending the night together exploring the city and she can’t help but feel the chemistry between the two of them. After exchanging numbers and parting ways she hopes there could be more. But she never hears from him again.
Three months pass by and in the meantime Jenny learns that her grandmother in South Korea isn’t well. Jenny convinces her mom to let her go with her to Korea and even enrolls in an arts high school to sell her on the idea. On her first day of school who does Jenny see other than the boy from the karaoke bar, Jaewo: K-pop star. Jenny finds herself conflicted with her feelings for Jaewoo and hurt from never hearing back from him. After learning he’s not allowed to date to keep their band, XOXO, out of the tabloids, Jenny and Jaewoo must navigate their feelings for each other and what they hold important.
Review of XOXO
I haven’t had this much fun reading a book in a very long time. It was just a really good time. I loved every single character in this story. They all added an element to the story and you couldn’t help rooting for each one in their own way. Jenny’s relationship with her mom and grandmother was a beautiful part of this story making it not just another YA Romance book. The K-pop and Korean culture that was a steady presence throughout was what made this book so special. Axie Oh made me feel like I was there with each one of the characters listening to the music, trying the food, and walking downtown Seoul.
I gave this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads.
Suggested Age Rating for XOXO
This book is considered YA and there wasn’t anything that stood out to make me disagree. There is romance but nothing descriptive. I’d give this book an age rating of 14+.
