The following is an honest review of Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson and my suggested age rating.
Synopsis of Vespertine
Vespertine is the story of a young nun named Artemisia who is undergoing training for a specific job. This job is to help the spirits of the deceased pass peacefully out of their bodies. She knows what its like to be possessed, after all she experienced it herself. Because of her past, she finds people always disappoint and would prefer living a life surrounding herself with the dead. One day, Artemisia finds herself in a situation where she is exposed to a revenant, a powerful spirit held captive inside an object. Reluctantly, Artemisia must use the power she can wield through the revenant to battle the Dark Magic that has come to her world.
Review of Vespertine
I have always been a fan of Joan of Arc. Because of that, this story spoke to me as soon as I found out about its release. The concept of Artemisia helping guide souls of bodies so they could rest in peace along with the dark magic elements made it sound like the perfect Halloween read. I have to say, this book just moved too slowly for me. The descriptions seemed to bog down the plot and just honestly make the book go by very slowly. I felt like as I read, I wasn’t making any progress if that makes sense. Even though I enjoyed the overall concept of this book, I felt I had to work at keeping myself engaged.
Age Rating for Vespertine
Overall, this book was very clean. There was no sexual content and no language. I would give this book an age rating of 13+ only because it deals with death, possession, and evil spirits. Artemisia did have a terrible childhood so there are potential trigger warnings there as well as triggers for self-harm.
