The following is an honest review of The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert and my suggested age rating.
Synopsis of The Hazel Wood
The Hazel Wood follows its main character Alice. All her life it seems as though bad luck follow her and her mom Ella. They constantly move from place to place trying to dodge this bad luck. Ella’s mother and Alice’s grandmother is a famous, yet reclusive author of dark and twisted fairy tales who lives on her estate, The Hazel Wood. One day Ella receives a letter telling her her mother has died. She hopes their bad luck has died along with her. When Ella is taken by people from the Hinterland, Alice must decide if she will bode her mother’s warning to “stay away from The Hazel wood,” or do whatever it takes to find her.
Review of The Hazel Wood
This book hooked me in at the beginning. It has all the elements that make this a perfect, spooky fall read. I will say, Alice’s character is not very likable. She plays the part of “moody teenager” really well and often times I wanted to slap her. I enjoyed Finch’s character and found him to be more endearing. The first 2/3 of this book were spot on and very enjoyable, but I found the last 1/3 to be….not so much. I feel like the author tried to throw too much into the climax of the story. It just became jumbled and often times didn’t make sense.
Overall, I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads.
Age Rating for The Hazel Wood
This book is pretty dark and twisted. There is talk of murder and death and there is language. Overall, I would give this book an age rating of 14+.
