The following is an honest review of We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal and my suggested age rating.
Zafira is the hunter who disguises herself as a man to help her people by hunting in the cursed forest: the Arz. Nasir is the Prince of Death, an assassin killing anyone who defies the Sultan (his father). Zafira and Nasir are both legends, but not for the reasons they want. Both the hunter and the assassin are sent on similar quests. Zafira must find the lost artifact to restore magic and destroy the Arz before it takes over Arawiya. Nasir was sent by the Sultan to kill the hunter and steal the lost artifact before someone else gets their hands on it. What already seemed a difficult task begins to seem impossible as Zafira and Nasir realize that this quest leads them to discover secrets of ancient evil that threatens their kingdom.
I enjoyed this book as well as the characters and world building. However at times I felt slightly confused because everything was moving so quickly. Zafira is definitely my favorite character.
She is a strong and beautiful female character who learns how to love.
At times I got rather irritated with Nasir and his whole “I can’t go against my father” attitude towards everything. I did start to love him towards the end and I love him even more in the sequel: We Free the Stars. My favorite character was probably Altair. So, if you haven’t read this and decide to, watch out for him. He is extremely sarcastic and witty which is a nice contrast to Zafira and Nasir’s serious personalities.
Overall, I really did love this book. The magic and folklore vibes were amazing. This book for me was like a combination of An Ember in the Ashes, The Bear and the Nightingale, and Shadow and Bone. I mean what more could you want?
I gave We Hunt the Flame 4/5 stars on Goodreads.
This book contains little language, lots of violence, and twisted magic. Because of the reasons previously stated I’m giving this book a suggested age rating of 13 and up.
