The following is a honest review of Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian and my suggested age rating.
The era of the Kaiser has ended. Theo has fled and taken Prinz Soren as hostage, along with her rightful title. The Kaiser thought the Ash Princess to be weak but a young women’s mind and wits are the deadliest weapon of all. However, fleeing the Kaiser meant leaving her people behind. Now Theo must find an army and fast to save them. Theo’s dreadful Aunt Dragonsbane claims the only way to get an army is to get a husband, which is something an Astrean Queen has never done. While Theo doesn’t wish to take any of the possible suitors as a husband, she knows better than anyone that freedom comes at a price.
Once again I really enjoyed reading about Theo and how she learned to become a good ruler. Lady Smoke is set on the water and in a new city which I won’t talk too much about. This new city is so captivating and beautiful, but like any city there are secrets. We see Theo face many hardships and trials in Lady Smoke, however she now knows she must stay strong for her people. Like Ash Princess, we have many strong side characters that support Theo along with some mysterious characters that maybe aren’t what they seem.
I could talk about this book forever but don’t want to give any spoilers. I gave this book a 4/5 stars on Goodreads.
Along with Ash Princess I would give Lady Smoke an Age Rating of 13 and up. There is little language, violence, romance with no sexual content, and murder.
