The following is an honest review of The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins and my suggested age rating.
Synopsis of The Wife Upstairs
Jane is a barely getting by young adult who has taken up dog walking for the rich suburbanites of the upscale neighborhood, Thornfield Estates. While out walking one day Jane “bumps” into the handsome Eddie. From that day they form an instant connection. Although Jane never lets Eddie see the real her, she feels like for the first time in her life she could be happy and have everything she wants. That is, until many red flags start to appear. Although Jane knows Eddie’s wife Bea and her friend Blanche drowned a year ago after a boating accident, she begins to wonder if there is more to the story. After befriending the ladies in the neighborhood circle and some digging of her own, Jane learns the truth about what happened the night of the accident.
Review of The Wife Upstairs
Because this was advertised as a Jane Eyre retelling I went in thinking it would be a modern day version of the classic. Maybe if I wouldn’t have had that as an expectation going in I would have liked this book more. I found that I honestly didn’t like any of the characters. They were are superficial and selfish; there was no one I was rooting for. I often found myself comparing the main characters to the real Jane and Edward and just didn’t feel like they measured up.
Without being compared to Jane Eyre this book definitely contains a great deal of mystery and suspense. I did like how there were shifts in POVs allowing you to see the past and present of the characters. I did find the fact that it takes place in entitled and suburban Alabama to be quite funny. Many of the comparisons were pretty accurate to characteristics I have seen growing up and living in the South. It was a pretty fast-paced read which I appreciate but the ending felt a bit rushed. Overall, I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads.
Age rating for The Wife Upstairs
This book had a lot of language in my opinion, sexual content, and talk of drugs/alcohol. I would give this book an adult rating of 18+.
