The following is my review and suggested age rating of A Reaper at the Gates, the third book in the An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir.
A Reaper at the Gates: Synopsis
A Reaper at the Gates continues the story of the Martial Empire and the evil seeking to exist there. The third book in the series continues to follow its main characters Elias, Laia, and the Blood Strike (Helene). Each must decide in which way their destiny will have them save their people. Elias is trapped in a role he never thought he would be in. Now he must learn to use it and the responsibilities it entails to bring balance to the world of the living and dead. While Laia is on a journey to destroy the Nightbringer, she learns a secret that alters her life. The Blood Strike feels her sole existence is to protect her sister, the Empress, who is carrying the heir to the throne. By ensuring a new heir, she is hopeful the Empire will see its kingdom restored.
A Reaper at the Gates: My Review
Often times in a series, as you read the next in line you wonder if it will be the one to disappoint. This was not the case, not even close. This book continued to include all the things I loved about the series. Sabaa Tahir continued to give us multiple POVs to help us see what each character was going through at the same time. As a result, it makes reading this book easy and seem extremely fast-paced. I loved continuing to watch the internal struggles each character faced specific to what they were trying to achieve. This book pulls at your heartstrings and for this reason you will find yourself rooting for each of the characters equally. I, without hesitation, gave this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads.
A Reaper at the Gates: Age Rating
This book contains some dark elements concerning ghosts/possession.There is little language if any that I recall. It has some implied sexual feelings/innuendos. It speaks of labor/delivery but not in detail. The main element to be conscious of in this series is violence as it is set in a world at war. Overall, I would give A Reaper at the Gates an age rating of 14+.
