I recently picked up Sabaa Tahir’s book An Ember in the Ashes at our local library.
This book has been all the rage for years as it came out in 2015. I’m not one to jump on the bandwagon just because it’s trendy. I saw the fourth book in the series in the “New Release” section and decided it was time to see what this book was about.
My Synopsis of An Ember in the Ashes:
An Ember in the Ashes is set in a world reminiscent of the Roman Empire. The caste system is also very similar. There are Martials who are soldiers of the Empire. Masks are known as the elite soldiers and killers for the Empire and are graduates from a selective and dark training school. Scholars are the outcasts who are seen as simpletons and worthless. There are tribesman who stick to themselves and their designated tribes in the desert. Finally there are slaves who can be bought and sold by just about anyone.
The main characters of this story are Elias, a trainee of the dark training school called Blackcliffe and Laia who starts out as a Scholar but of her choosing becomes a slave. The story constantly switches back and forth from each of their perspectives by chapter. I like this style of writing because it keeps you interested and invested to see what happens next. Eventually, their stories begin to intertwine and that is when the story really takes off. Laia and Elias eventually join forces in an effort to combat the evil that grows around them as those closest to them try to strengthen the reign of the Empire.
My Review of An Ember in the Ashes:
An Amber in the Ashes has everything you want in a book. This book contains strong main characters who you see develop consistently throughout the book. It also has interesting side characters who really help support the main characters and continue to build the story throughout. There are fantasy aspects, plenty of action and adventure, a tinge of romance, and the good vs. evil theme throughout. It is also full of suspense which keeps you wanting to read more to find out what happens next.
I would strongly recommend An Ember in the Ashes to anyone who is in a reading slump because I definitely think it’d pull you out. Also, if you know someone who doesn’t love reading that much I honestly think this book could change their minds! I immediately picked up the second book in this series as soon as I finished the first and I can’t wait to see how this series continues. I rated this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads.
