The following is an honest review of Shady Hollow by Juneau Black and my suggested age rating.
Synopsis of Shady Hollow
Shady Hollow is a small village where all its critters cohabitate peacefully. Not much happens in the way of crime aside from the occasional burglary and noise complaints. When a grumpy ol’ toad turns up dead it’s left to Vera Vixen, the local news reporter, to investigate. Once Vera starts poking around however, she discovers this murder may be more complicated than she thought. It seems the culprit will stop at no end to ensure they aren’t revealed. Vera must team up with her fellow villagers to crack the case….so long as she’s sure she can trust them.
Review of Shady Hollow
This book is the perfect read for someone diving into the cozy mystery genre (me). I have to admit the concept of woodland critters as main characters seemed a little weird to me at first. Once I dove in, however, it read like a regular mystery and the fact that critters were main characters only added to the book’s charm. Shady Hollow reminds me of Zootopia but for adults. The characters each contribute to the charm, coziness, and mystery in their own way. Although this book wasn’t necessarily life-changing, I did thoroughly enjoy it and will be continuing the series in the future.
I gave this book 3.5/5 stars on Goodreads.
Suggested Age Rating of Shady Hollow
This book contains violence, death, infidelity, descriptions of crime scenes, and gore. There is no language, that I can remember anyways.
