Christmas by the Book Review and Age Rating

December 12, 2022 by theselyricsandlines Leave a Comment

The following is an honest review of Christmas by the Book by Anne Marie Ryan and my suggested age rating.

Synopsis of Christmas by the Book

Nora and her husband Simon own a cozy, historic bookstore in their small British village. Not only is the bookstore their livelihood it is also their home. They live in the upstairs apartment above the bookstore and have since they were first married over 30 years ago. Although the bookstore holds countless memories for both young and old, it is at risk of holding its last Christmas party. Despite Nora’s best efforts, the bookstore can no longer pay its bills. One day Nora has an idea. She will host a contest in which people can nominate someone in need of a pick-me-up. The winner will get a hand-selected book delivered to their door. Due to so many entries, Nora and Simon decide to select six winners. When each winner receives their book, their life is given just the spark of joy it needs. Even though Nora and Simon have no idea how they’ll save their beloved bookstore, they continue to try their best to make a difference in the lives of those around them. Their efforts don’t go unnoticed and garner a pick-me-up of their own.

Review of Christmas by the Book

If you are looking for the perfect Christmas book about books, look no further! This one contains countless book references that any book lover will appreciate. I love the aesthetic and cozy vibes this book gives. The small, quant village it is set in is full of likable and relatable characters. Nora and Simon are the perfect protagonists of this story and you can’t help but cheer them on as they try to save their bookstore. This has easily become one of my favorite Christmas reads! I gave it 4.5 stars on Goodreads.

Suggested Age Rating for Christmas by the Book

This book contains mild language, heavy topics such as depression, loneliness, and grief. There are also some mild sexual innuendos. Overall I would give this book an age rating of 16+.

🌲SYNOPSIS🌲

“Hunt or be hunted the forest awaits”

Winnie’s father is a witch and a traitor, she wants nothing more than to join the luminaries an ancient order that protects her town… but her family is shunned because of her father’s actions. On her 16th birthday she gets one chance to compete in the hunter trials, to prove herself to the Luminaries and the town. However asking Jay Friday, her ex best friend for help isn’t what she expected. She’ll have to learn to set aside her feelings for being looked down on all these years and instead make everyone regret they ever did.

🌲REVIEW🌲

I read this synopsis of this book and thought to myself: this has the village vibes and take my money.
I loved this book! My one complaint is I thought it was a standalone but it’s a series and now I need the other books now haha!

I really enjoyed the characters and although Winnie was a tad annoying at times I feel like she had the right to be annoyed with the people around her. The growth between Jay and Winnie was so fun to read, and I’m excited to see their character development in later installments.

ALSO I knowwww everyone has way more secrets than they’re letting on

If you want something that has a somewhat dystopian feeling, coming of age, and emotional story, I highly recommend The Luminaries

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🌲AGE RATING🌲

I’m giving The Luminaries an age rating of 14 and up. It’s not extremely dark but some descriptions of monsters might be disturbing for younger audiences
