A Wilderness of Stars Review and Age Rating

November 29, 2022 by theselyricsandlines Leave a Comment

The following post is an honest review of A Wilderness of Stars by Shea Ernshaw and my suggested age rating. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for a digital ARC in exchange for a review.

Synopsis of A Wilderness of Stars

Vega has lived in the valley her entire life raised solely by her mother. She has been taught the importance of studying the stars and the magic they hold. A sickness, known as consumption is slowly but surely killing off the inhabitants of Vega’s land. After her mother’s death and witnessing legendary stars in the sky, Vega realizes it is time for her to leave the valley in search of answers. She knows she is the key to helping the remaining inhabitants of her land survive. It is one she must keep secret although the tattoos on her neck are clues. Vega is the last surviving astronomer and the only hope of saving those who remain unscathed by the disease.

Review of A Wilderness of Stars

Shea Ernshaw is an auto-read for me. I usually love her writing, the atmospheres she creates, and her characters. Unfortunately, A Wilderness of Stars is my least favorite book she has written. While the concept and setting were interesting at first, I felt as though she was trying to mesh too many genres into one. This book contained fantasy, dystopian, western, and science fiction elements as well as some romance sprinkled in. I enjoy all of these genres and think they have the potential to work well together, for me they just didn’t in this book. I felt like the pacing of this book was also very slow and stayed slow until about 3/4 of the way through. Once things did start to pick up I just didn’t feel like it blended well together.

Overall I would give this book 3/5 stars. While there were things I enjoyed about this book, I can’t help but compare it to her others.

Suggested Age Rating for A Wilderness of Stars

This book contained language, drinking, illness/death, violence, and mild romance. I would give this book an age rating of 14+.

🌲SYNOPSIS🌲

“Hunt or be hunted the forest awaits”

Winnie’s father is a witch and a traitor, she wants nothing more than to join the luminaries an ancient order that protects her town… but her family is shunned because of her father’s actions. On her 16th birthday she gets one chance to compete in the hunter trials, to prove herself to the Luminaries and the town. However asking Jay Friday, her ex best friend for help isn’t what she expected. She’ll have to learn to set aside her feelings for being looked down on all these years and instead make everyone regret they ever did.

🌲REVIEW🌲

I read this synopsis of this book and thought to myself: this has the village vibes and take my money.
I loved this book! My one complaint is I thought it was a standalone but it’s a series and now I need the other books now haha!

I really enjoyed the characters and although Winnie was a tad annoying at times I feel like she had the right to be annoyed with the people around her. The growth between Jay and Winnie was so fun to read, and I’m excited to see their character development in later installments.

ALSO I knowwww everyone has way more secrets than they’re letting on

If you want something that has a somewhat dystopian feeling, coming of age, and emotional story, I highly recommend The Luminaries

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🌲AGE RATING🌲

I’m giving The Luminaries an age rating of 14 and up. It’s not extremely dark but some descriptions of monsters might be disturbing for younger audiences
