The following is an honest review of Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak and my suggested age rating.
Synopsis of Hidden Pictures
Mallory Quinn is trying to put her life back together. After recovering from drug addiction, her sponsor finds her a job as a full-time, live-in nanny for a five-year-old boy named Teddy. Teddy’s parents live in a wealthy suburban neighborhood with a house and amenities to show for it. Living in the pool house, she is able to enjoy their lifestyle, have stability, and spend time with Teddy. Although Teddy is shy, he quickly warms up to Mallory. Their days are spent going on adventures, swimming, and baking. It all seems too good to be true….and it is. Mallory discovers that during Teddy’s rest time his normal drawings become something a little more sinister. Not only that, but he has an imaginary friend who he blames for the drawings. As the days pass and the drawings become more and more concerning, Mallory’s research gives her reason to believe these drawings may be linked to an unsolved murder in their area. The twists and turns only get steeper when Mallory elicits help from a cute landscaper who lives in the neighborhood. Together they are confronted with the truth, which turns out to be far more than they bargained for.
Review of Hidden Pictures
This book has been all over my Instagram feed. The illustrations in the book (which there are plenty of) are what drew me in. They remind me of something we studied in one of my college classes and I knew I had to get my hands on this book.
Hidden Pictures did not disappoint in any way whatsoever. From the beginning, Jason Rekulak’s writing style had me hooked. The story was easy to read and follow while keeping you on the edge of your seat the entire way through. There are plenty of twists in the story I didn’t see coming and the ending was unpredictable.
I loved this book, especially the ending. Wow….I didn’t expect to tear up at the end of a horror/suspense/thriller.
I (without hesitation) gave this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads.
